Of all the fantastic things you can experience in the beautiful capital of Peru – the city of Lima – none are as unique and downright lovely as the Parque del Amor. The Park of Love, as we know it in English, is located on the coast in the Miraflores District of Lima.
Let’s take a look at what makes this park so special, and one of the loveliest competitions that are connected to it:
The Beauty of Lima’s Love Park
The park's location is wonderful and offers some of the most awe-inspiring views of the Pacific Ocean. Combine that with the beautiful flowerbeds, colorful mosaics carved in stone, and the mesmerizing statue of El Beso, and you get one of the most romantic locations not only in Lima, but all of Peru and beyond.
Sculpture in front of "The Kiss)
The park was built in 1993 on Valentine's Day, and its makers envisioned it as a celebration of love in all of its beautiful forms. It definitely achieves that with all of its sculptures, benches, flowers, trees, and the marvelous view of the ocean.
However, the park is even more beautiful because of its visitors – the couples, both young and old, who come here to enjoy the beautiful scenery and give promises of eternal love and devotion to each other.
It was, in part, inspired by the Park Guell in Barcelona, built by the famous Antoni Gaudi. We can also argue that Love Park is the smaller brother of Park Guell, but one that offers a lot more for anyone who knows and appreciates the power of love.
What's also interesting is the fact that there are many lines from various Peruvian poets scattered across the mosaics found throughout the park. Here's one from Rocio Romina Bances that has left a powerful mark on us: "Amor es solo un pájaro que deambula", or in English: "Love is only a bird that wanders."
What Is El Beso and the Competition Connected to It?
In the middle of the stunning Park of Love stands a detailed and gorgeous statue called El Beso. In translation, it simply means The Kiss. It’s maker, the sculptor Victor Delfin, made it to represent him and his wife in a romantic embrace. They are also kissing each other, which is why the statue bears the name it has.
- Kiss Contest (14 Feb)
However, the statue is not only there to be gazed at, but it is also the location where the mayor of the Miraflores District of Lima holds a competition for the longest kiss. The competition is naturally held on February 14, and any couple can participate. If you haven't guessed from the name, couples kiss in the competition, and the ones with the longest kiss win.
Love Park at Night
El Beso is the main one of the many romantic and beautiful things and events you can find in the Park of Love. If you decide to visit Lima, you should know that the park is a must-visit location for you and your significant other.
