Lake of the Condor
Chachapoyas, Peru.

Late in 1996 a group of farmers found a group of six chullpas (burial buildings) located on a ledge 100 meters above the peaceful Lake of the Condors. This is a cloud forest area in the Peruvian Andes, 10/12 hours from Leymebamba town.

On the chullpas, there were more than 200 mummies that belong to the ancient Chachapoyas times. The discovery is giving valuable information to the archaeologist and scientifics to know more about this amazing culture who was conquered by the Incas. Moreover embalmed inca mumies have been found in the chullpas.

Now the mummies are at Centro Mallqui-The Bioanthropology Foundation Peru, n institution dedicated to archaeological and anthropological research of Peru's ancient cultures. Here Dra Sonia Guillen leads a group of archeaologists and researchers.

Dr Sonia Guillen, wrote the following about The Mummies of the Laguna de los Condores (lake of the Condors):

"The study of the Chachapoyas people, whose civilization flourished in the cloud forest of northeastern Peru from around AD 800 to 1470, is based primarily on the remains of their stone constructions, ceramics and stone artifacts. As a result, our impression of the region's ancient inhabitants was limited to the territory they occupied and its siza. The types of archeological material preserved biased our perception. The Discovery at the Laguna de los Condores, however, changed this perception and improved the possibilities of reconstructing the region's cultural history ".
