Reserve/Heath Pampas/Puerto Maldonado/Lima
Highlights: Birding at pristine Amazon forest
and Tambopata’s most beautiful Lakes. Includes macaw clay
lick and unique savannah habitat. Also birding near Puerto Maldonado
add manu species of secondary habitats.
Included: Guided tours by specialist, transportation,
entrance fees, hotel, lodges and some meals according to program.
Not included: International airfare, domestic
airfares Lima-Puerto Maldonado-Lima (ca. 250 US$), airport taxes,
personal expenses and some meals in cities to give you freedom of
choice and because some people skip meals.
ITINERARY
Day 1
Arrival in Lima, transfer to hotel,
Overnight Sonesta El Olivar*****
Day 2
Visit to the Villa marshes. Birds we will be looking for in this
typical coastal marshes are Peruvian Thickknee, 5 species of Ducks,
Great Grebe, Gray-hooded Gull, Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Wren-like
Rushbird, etc. If time allows we will then head to the port of Pucusana
for some gulls, terns (Inca Tern), the Humboldt Penguin, the Seaside
Cinclodes, and other seabirds. We will also stop at desert scrub
for seedeaters, hummingbirds, miners, and others. Overnight at Sonesta
El Olivar*****.

Day 3
Fly to Puerto Maldonado, where we will spend some time birding around
the town for birds like the Purus Jacamar, White-tailed Kite and
other open habitat birds. A one-hour boat trip brings us to the
Sandoval dock, from where we will slowly bird our way on a 2.7 km
walk to the Sandoval Lake Lodge, while our luggage is taken by cart
to the lodge. The final stretch to the lake we will do on a catamaran.
Overnight at Sandoval Lake Lodge.

Day 4
We will spend one early morning in the flooded forest on the other
side of the lake where our highlight will be the Black-faced Cotinga.
Then we spend some relaxing time in a catamaran exploring the shores
for Hoatzin, herons, canopy and fly over birds. The afternoon will
be spent on the trail system through terra firme behind the lodge.
Overnight at Sandoval lake Lodge.

Day 5
An early morning bird-walk will take us back to the port on the
Madre de Dios River for our 7 hour trip to Pampas del Heath where
we will arrive in the late afternoon.
Overnight at Heath River Wildlife Center.

Day 6
The first morning will be set aside to visit the macaw clay lick
where a specially designed blind will allow spectacular views. Later
and in the afternoon we will visit some oxbow lakes and bird along
the shores of the Heath river. Overnight at Heath River Wildlife
Center.

Day 7
Dawn will be spending in terra firme forest on the trail system
in search of mixed flocks. In the afternoon we will walk to the
Pampas where we will be birding until sunset. Dinner will be served
in our camp where we will spend the night. Overnight at Heath River
Wildlife Center.

Day 8
Early in the morning we will spend most of the time in the platform,
where we will have breakfast while we look for the pampas birds.
Overnight at Heath River Wildlife Center.

Day 9
Another day spend in the trail system for terra firme birds. Overnight
at Heath River Wildlife center.
Meals : B, L, D
Day 10
Short dawn birding on the trail system and early start to Puerto
Maldonado. Overnight at Cabana Quinta Hotel***.

Day 11
Early trip to the grasslands around the airport for some birds like
the White-tailed Kite, Pearl Kite as well as some seedeaters. Commercial
flight to Lima. Overnight at Sonesta Posada del Inca El Olivar*****.

Transfer to the airport.

Important: Though we have never heard of anyone contracting yellow
fever anywhere in Peru or neighboring countries, Peru nevertheless
requires a current yellow fever vaccination for trips to the rainforest
regions. This vaccination is usually required for all rainforest
regions around the world.
